The Cooper family came to Esquimalt from Halifax in 1920.
Alistair Cousland was born October 17, 1931 and was a fourth generation Victorian. He was a nephew of Gladys Wake, and grandson of John and Ada Matson. Ada lived at the former Croft family home, Mount Adelaide, until her death in 1957.
Alistair attended Glenlyon, Brentwood College, Uvic, and UBC and was an active member of the Union Club. He was married to Teresa and had three children. He passed away April 12, 2017.
Alistair's aunt, Nursing Sister Gladys Maude Mary Wake, was a member of the Canadian Army Medical Corps. She enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) on January 6, 1916. Gladys died in Etaples, France on May 21, 1918, after the Germans bombed the Canadian hospital.
In 1927 Emily's parents, John & Anastasia Cooper, came to Esquimalt from Halifax. John Cooper was in the Navy. Emily had nine siblings - Gordon, Jackie (Norby), Joan (Cross) (Fiddler), June (Helgeson), Gladys (Cudby), Pearl (Harper), Edward, Allen, Gary.
Frank De Gruchy was born on August 15, 1927. He was married to Agnes and had four children: Bill, Dick, Tom and Lois. Frank was a shipwright in HMC Dockyard for 38 years. He was also an amateur photographer in Esquimalt for 40 years. He passed away on January 10, 2017.
Jean's husband, Harvey Dobson, was born in Esquimalt in 1908. The couple married in St. Paul's Church in 1937. Harvey's parents, Albet Henry Dobson and Emily May Young, who was born in old Esquimalt Village in 1882.
S. Horace Draper was born on April 2, 1925 in Ottawa. He married Louise and had 3 children: Dianne, Marilyn, and Bev. He served overseas with the Canadian Navy during WWII. He also served as a Navy photographer stationed at HMCS Naden from 1944-1945. Horace later worked as a draughtsman and photographer with the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory for over 25 years. He has also done most of the copy work for Esquimalt Municipal Archives. He passed away on June 16, 2005.
J.D. (Pat) Dunlop (nee Braddock) was born in England in 1921. She later married George Francis Dunlop on March 14, 1945. George's parents were Dorothy and James Somerville Dunlop. The Dunlops were active in community affairs in Esquimalt.
William (Bill) Arthur Emery has been a resident of Esquimalt since 1939. He attended Esquimalt schools and graduated from UVic with a B.Sc degree. Bill was an army officer, retiring in 1994 with the rank of major.
