Van Dalen, Jack

Jack Van Dalen was born in 1925 in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, where he apprenticed with the city parks department. In 1951 he immigrated to Canada, and in 1958 he moved to Esquimalt. He became an employee of the Municipality of Esquimalt in 1962, eventually being named Parks Manager in 1974. Van Dalen completed the four-year correspondence course in horticulture through the University of Guelph. He retired on August 31, 1985.

Wurtele, Alfred Charles

Alfred Charles Wurtele was born in Kingston, Ont., August 17, 1897. He married Anne Sherwood June 26, 1937, and they had two children: Anne and Elizabeth. He graduated from Royal Canadian Naval College. Alfred was captain of HMCS Stadacona in Halifax, NS. He served as Reeve of Esquimalt for 14 years (1952-65) and was a member of Council from 1946 to 1981. He was made the first Freeman of the Township of Esquimalt in 1987.

Young, Arthur

Arthur Young was born Oct. 23, 1923. He was a longtime resident of Esquimalt, B.C., where he received his education at Lampson St. School. He and two brothers operated the Esquimalt Meat Market, which was established by their father in 1912. Arthur Young served Esquimalt as alderman (1968-1970) and mayor (1970-1980).

Hill, Ken

Kenneth Anthony Steven Hill was born August 18, 1927, in Esquimalt, B. C. He married Betty Cleo Aitken in 1950. They had six children: Sharon, Steven, Sandra, Susan, Ronald and Brenda. An electrician by trade, Mr. Hill also served as alderman from 1969 to 1977, as mayor from 1979 to 1987, and was a member of the Board of the Capital Regional District from 1982 to 1987. Ken Hill grew up at 824 Ellery Street during the 1930's and at 3015 Quadra Street until 1950. He built his home at 365 Lampson Street in 1954.

Robinson, Darwin

Darwin Robinson was born in Parry Sound and came to Esquimalt with the Royal Canadian Navy. Following a career of 39 years, he retired in 1995. He is married to the former Sherri Smith, they have four children. Mr. Robinson was a member of Municipal Council from 1979-1985, and was Mayor from 2003 to 2005.
