      History

      Phoebe Edith Simmons (Buxton) was born in the brick house at Fort Rodd Hill on January 5, 1911. She was the oldest child of fourteen in the well-known Buxton family and was a long-time resident of Esquimalt. Phoebe took pride in caring for her many siblings as they grew and was never happier than when she married her love, Barney Simmons and had two children of her own. Barney died in the Gorge Road Hospital in 1987.

      Phoebe and her sisters, Phyllis Mills and Patricia Gillespie, provided an oral history in 1991. A transcript can be viewed/obtained from the Esquimalt Municipal Archives.
