Alvin Charles (Smokey) was born October 29, 1914. He was a career soldier, Smokey joined the D.C.O.R. reserves in Vancouver in 1933. In 1935 he became an active member of the P.P.C.L.I. in Esquimalt going overseas in 1939 to serve in Sicily, Italy, and the Liberation of Amsterdam. Smokey retired in 1962 as a respected Sergeant-Major. In 1980 he participated in Amsterdam’s 35th Anniversary Salute to Canada. An avid sportsman, he was Esquimalt Sportsman of the Year in 1972, for his accomplishments as a Bisley sharpshooter, a curler, golfer, and softball coach. He was a founding member of the Victoria-Saanich Women’s Fastball League.
Smokey passed away July 5, 2002.

John Lock, grandfather of donor (Walter Lock) died during WWII. Fred and Isobel Lock moved to Ladysmith before Walter Lock went overseas. They opened up a shop there. The building on 4th Ave. in Ladysmith is still there.
