Biographical history

Gladys (Huick) Durrant moved to Esquimalt when she married Ernie Durrant in 1946. They have 2 children, Susan and Mark. They operated Durrant's Bakery for about 10 years. Gladys has been active in the arts community in Esquimalt, is well known for her pen and ink sketchs of buildings. She was one of the founding members of the Esquimalt Archives and was also active in the reopening of Lampson St. School. She served on various other community organizations or committees: The 75th Anniversary Committee, the Board of the Wellness Centre (1991-1994) and the Esquimalt Heritage Advisory Committee (1988-1993), chairing from 1990-1992. She is a recipient of the Lescarbot Award.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of photographs of commerce, business establishments and other scenes of Esquimalt. Most of the photographs captures events celebrating Esquimalt's 75th Anniversary such as the World Jr. Curling Championship, Freedom of Municipality, 3rd Battalion PPCLI and Old Drydock 100th anniversary. The fonds also includes oral histories Gladys Durrant conducted with notable Esquimalt residents: Frederick Lock, Frank Elston and Mrs. Christina Ord.
