Hazel Piper was born in Regina and came to Esquimalt, working as a stenographer in Victoria. She was a member of Esquimalt United Church Young People's and was engaged to Harry Elam when he was killed in 1945. She married Walter E. Piper and they have one son, Martyn Glenn, who lives in Kingston.
