Historia biográfica

Alfred Charles Wurtele was born in Kingston, Ont., August 17, 1897. He married Anne Sherwood June 26, 1937, and they had two children: Anne and Elizabeth. He graduated from Royal Canadian Naval College. Alfred was captain of HMCS Stadacona in Halifax, NS. He served as Reeve of Esquimalt for 14 years (1952-65) and was a member of Council from 1946 to 1981. He was made the first Freeman of the Township of Esquimalt in 1987.

The fonds consists of photographs of Commander Wurtele, scenes of Esquimalt and staff of the Esquimalt municipal government; text of a radio speech; and a written history of the Wurtele family 1792-1992, along with other written and taped reminiscences about living in Esquimalt.
